Team
Jenna Cato Bass (Founder, Management Team, Facilitator) is a South African writer, filmmaker and former magician. Their award-winning films include Love The One You Love (2014), High Fantasy (2017), Flatland (2019) and Good Madam (2021), and have screened around the world, including at the Sundance, Berlinale and Toronto Film Festivals.
Qondiswa James (Founder, Management Team, Facilitator) is a freelance cultural worker living between Cape Town and Johannesburg. She is an award-winning writer and theatre-maker, performance artist, film and theatre performer, installation artist, arts facilitator and activist. Her work engages the socio-political imagination towards mobilising transgression.
Mpho Sekhoto (Management Team) is a filmmaker whose work is driven by a commitment to researching, producing, and archiving African stories to build an inclusive visual legacy for the continent. Currently she works in the film industry in varying production office roles.
Through participation in FFS programmes she has produced The Life Of An Urbanised Man (2024), The Job Interview (2023), Stringer (2023) and Assistant Directed Vibrations (2025).

Cynthia Mkhize (Management Team) is an aspiring South African actress who is delving into the wider aspects of the film industry. Since joining FFS in October 2023, she has had the opportunity to work on sets in various areas including production, location management and driving for the Art department. She has also been involved in the 48 Hour Film Project: Acting on STRINGER (2023) and Producer on DAY ZERO (2024) and JASMINE (2025)
Free Film School is a film and arts education programme, that provides alternative, accessible and Africa-centric skills-sharing between established and aspiring filmmakers, writers, artists and activists in South Africa.
