About
Free Film School is a film and arts education programme, providing weekly, free, public classes on Saturdays at Bertha House in Cape Town. Drawing on our wide network of industry professionals, sessions balance theory with practice in a variety of creative, technical and social skills.
Launching in 2019 with a series of screenings and workshops across the Greater Cape Town Area, during the pandemic Free Film School transitioned into an online platform, Lockdown Film School. In 2021 we returned to in-person teaching through a collaboration with Queer Writers Incubator. Since early 2022 Free Film School has expanded into a formalised programme and community hub for ongoing, holistic, sustainable education in the long term.

Free Film School is organised by Free Film Collective, a registered non-profit organisation and voluntary association, and has been supported by Goethe Institut Johannesburg, CAV’ Platform, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Queer Writers Incubator, The University of Cape Town, Screen.Cubator, The Centre For Film & Media Studies and The Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs & Sports.
